Fine Autograph Letter Signed, marked ‘Private’ to Davies GILBERT (1767-1830 Engineer, Author and Politician, Member and President of the Royal Society) acknowledging his letter and assuring him “that I have the utmost personal satisfaction in undertaking any labours or inquiries which have for their object the promotion of science in this Country. I not only feel it a public duty - but I take a deep interest in these matters apart from all considerations of official station. Never scruple therefore to address yourself to me on any points on which a Representation to the Executive Government is requisite. Peel was considered one of the rising stars of the Tory party, first entering the cabinet in 1822 as Home Secretary. In that role he introduced a number of important reforms of British criminal law: most memorably establishing the Metropolitan Police Force He also reformed the criminal law, reducing the number of crimes punishable by death, and simplified it by repealing a large number of criminal statutes and consolidating their provisions into what are known as Peel's Acts. He reformed the gaol system, introducing payment for gaolers and education for the inmates.
