Ferdinand was an ally of the Kaiser in World War I. Ex-King Ferdinand of Bulgaria, known during the war as "Ferdy the Fox", was once refused permission to enter England by King Edward, but he came to England in July 1934 and went to Rhodes House, Oxford where he attended an Ornithological conference.
