CROMPTON (Richmal, 1890-1969, Author of the ‘Just William’ Books)

Autograph Letter Signed in full (‘Richmal Crompton’) as ‘Vice Chair’ to Dennis WHEATLEY (1897-1977, Novelist) “writing on behalf of the Writer’s Section London Lyceum Club to ask if you would be so very kind as to come to our next ‘Book Tea’ as guest of honour & give us a short talk on ‘Black Magic’ or any other subject you like. We have the Book Teas each month - tea at 4 & talk at 4.30. Among our recent speakers we have had Miss Dorothy Sayers, Miss Margaret Irwin & Mr Philip Guedalla. It would give us the greatest pleasure to welcome you. I do so hope that you will be able to come...”, 2 sides 8vo., London Lyceum Club headed paper, no date, together with a carbon copy of Wheatley’s reply thanking her for the invitation and saying he “should have been very happy to do so but recently I have taken on the personality page of the Sunday Graphic which necessitates my going out much more than I have been doing for some time past. I am, of course, continuing with my books, but this excursion into journalism limits the time that I can give to them; so for the time being I am unable to accept any invitations for literary talks... In writing to you it is a pleasure to be able to congratulate you upon your books which have given myself and my family, like countless thousands of others, many hours of enjoyment...”, 1 side A4, no place, 30th January

The William books sold over 12 million copies in the United Kingdom alone. They have been adapted for films, stage-plays, and numerous radio and television series. Illustrations by Thomas Henry contributed to their success.
