COOPER
(Lady Diana, née Lady Diana Olivia Winifred Maud Manners, 1892-1986, Actress & Author)
Fine Signed Photo signed with her maiden name ‘Diana Manners’ and dated
showing her three quarters length wearing a marvellous 1920’s fur trimmed evening dress and headdress,8” x 6”, no place, dated
Born Lady Diana Manners, she was an English aristocrat who was a well-known social figure in London and Paris.
Taken in 1915 when she was training to be a nurse at Guys Hospital. As a young woman, she moved in a celebrated group of intellectuals known as the Coterie, most of whom were killed in the First World War. The headline to this picture remarks that she is a, ‘Deserter of the Drawing-Room for War’. In 1919 she married one of the few survivors, Duff Cooper, later British ambassador to France. After his death, she wrote three volumes of memoirs which reveal much about early 20th-century upper-class life.
