CRANE
(Walter, 1845-1915, Painter and Illustrator)
Autograph Letter Signed to
Sir Walter BESANT
(1836-1901, Novelist, Biographer & Social Reformer) saying that he “certainly cannot resist the conclusions at which you have arrived in regard to Mr Johnson and his society and have therefore withdrawn my name from all connection with it...”, 1 side card 4½” x 3½”, 13 Holland St, Kensington, 28th November
His association with Besant is likely to spring from his concern for art and social reform as in 1884 Besant had initiated the Home Arts and Industries Association, very similar in its aims to the Art Workers Guild, of which Crane was master in 1888 and 1889 and to the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society, which he helped to found in 1888.
