GIBSON (John, 1790-1866, Sculptor, R.A., his first commission was the Chatsworth ‘Mars & Cupid’)

Autograph Letter Signed to Mr STORY (William Wetmore, 1819-1895, American Sculptor, Art Critic, Poet and Editor) saying that “After examining your little statue in bronze of Beethoven which I think very clever, full of life & character - as it is an original work modelled by yourself & then executed in bronze which, altogether, requires considerable time to do, I think the price at £100 is moderate...”, 1 side 8vo., Rome, 1st November lacking bottom right hand corner without effecting the text

Story graduated from Harvard College in 1838 and the Harvard Law School in 1840. However, he soon abandoned the law in order to devote himself to sculpture, and after 1850 lived in Rome, which he had first visited in 1848, and where he counted among his friends the Brownings and Walter Savage Landor. Story's apartment in Palazzo Barberini became a central location for Americans in Rome.
