LOWE (Sir Hudson, 1769-1844, Soldier, Governor of St. Helena, 1815-1821)

Autograph Letter Signed to Sir Nicholas Harris NICHOLAS (1799-1848, Naval Officer and Barrister) sending him “the book of which you were speaking, but as I have some occasion to refer to it, shall be obliged, by your suffering me to send or call for it tomorrow afternoon... I shall probably do myself the pleasure of calling as I am always happy of any pretext for doing so...”, 2 sides 8vo., no place, no date, Monday afternoon

Having served in the navy from 1812 to 1816, Nicholas studied law and was called to the bar at the Inner Temple in 1825. His work as a barrister was confined principally to peerage cases before the House of Lords, and he devoted the rest of his time to the study of genealogy and history. In 1831, he was made a knight of the Royal Guelphic Order, and, in 1832, chancellor and Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George.
