LONGFELLOW (Henry Wadsworth, 1807-1882, American Poet)

Fine Autograph Letter Signed to an unnamed correspondent thanking him for his “friendly letter and the ‘Cantata’ that came with it, and beg you to accept my most cordial thanks for this mark of your regard. I have not yet been able to have the music played and sung, as that is no very easy matter, and I will not wait for that to acknowledge the honor you have done me by your composition. If faith be ‘the substance of things unseen’, why not of things unheard? So I listen and seem to hear the song, and thank the composer...”, 3 sides 8vo., Cambridge, 8th November

The recipient is probably Henry Charles LAHEE (1856-1953) who was a writer on music. He wrote several comprehensive biographical reference works on musicians and from 1891 to 1899, he served as secretary of the New England Conservatory of Music. This came from an album largely addressed to him.
