to Richard Estcott, Steward for the Stannaries in Devon, in a clear hand, requiring him “by the Oath of good lawfull men of that Stannarie” to “enquire after, and seize upon the Goods and Chattles of Symon Lee, Marten Rowe, Elianor Mudge, Barnaby Hutchins, Edmond Furse, John Rich, and Richard Glawen, Tinners, attainted of Fellonie, or Felons de se... and to be accountable to me for the same for his Ma[jes]t[ie]s use”,

Philip became fourth earl of Pembroke, on the death in April 1630 of his brother William, the third earl, and succeeded him as lord warden of the Stannaries. According to Clarendon, he extended the jurisdiction of that office ‘with great fury and passion,’ to the oppression of the people of Cornwall and Devonshire.
