DISRAELI (Benjamin, Earl of Beaconsfield, 1804-1881, Prime Minister and Novelist)

Fine Autograph Letter Signed with initial ‘D’ to R. A. EARLE (Ralph Anstruther, 1835-1879, Conservative Politician) saying that “as to the political elements of... consult Northcote, & decided by his opinion. As to the securing you will have to rely entirely on yourself - There is no prospect, or probability of getting any assistance, unless local, of wh, of course, I can form no opinion. I enclose a note from Stafforth wh; I opened as in electioneering matters, the slightest delay is sometimes dangerous. What he says about the delay of the writ, will affect the question of expenses. Earle came from a well-known Liverpool slave-trading family with a Whig background, and was educated at Harrow, before joining the British Foreign Service. While working as an attaché at the embassy in Paris, from 1857 he supplied Benjamin Disraeli, who was leading the opposition in the House of Commons, with secret diplomatic information to use against the government of Lord Palmerston.
