CRANE WRITES ON DESIGNING A MACE FOR THE SUFFRAGETTES CRANE (Walter, 1845-1915, Painter and Illustrator)

Autograph Letter Signed to Mrs SCRATCHERD (Alice Cliff, 1842-1906, early British Suffragist) thanking her for her letter “& in reply beg to say that I shall be willing to design the mace you speak of. My fee for the design & working drawings would probably be about...” the figures has been removed, “If however, I made a complete model of it for the silversmith it would be about as much again. Though, of course, much would depend upon the amount of detail & invention introduced. I have no doubt I could get you an estimate for supplying the mace complete in silver & enamels or in silver-gilt if you preferred? In 1891 Mrs Scratcherd founded the Women's Franchise League, with Harriet McIlquham, Ursula Bright, Emmeline Pankhurst, Richard Pankhurst and Elizabeth Clarke Wolstenholme Elmy. She was a lifelong campaigner for women's rights in the Leeds area.
