POWELL (John Enoch, 1912-1998, Conservative and Independent Unionist Politician)

Typed Letter Signed to Professor Geoffrey BEST (1928-2018, Historian known for his studies of Winston Churchill) saying that “neither of us will wish to enter into a debate by correspondence; but i cannot refrain from expressing my astonishment that the concept of ‘human rights’ has in your opinion anything to do with Christianity...”, 1 side 8vo., House of Commons headed paper, with original envelope, 26th January

Before entering politics, Powell was a classical scholar. During the Second World War, he served in both staff and intelligence positions, reaching the rank of brigadier. He also wrote poetry, and many books on classical and political subjects. Powell attracted widespread attention for his "Rivers of Blood" speech, delivered on 20th April 1968 to the General Meeting of the West Midlands Area Conservative Political Centre. In it, Powell criticised the rates of immigration into the UK, especially from the New Commonwealth, and opposed the anti-discrimination legislation Race Relations Bill. The speech drew sharp criticism from some of Powell's own party members and The Times,125 with Conservative Party leader Edward Heath dismissing Powell a day after the speech from his position as Shadow Defence Secretary.
