SCOTT (Sir George Gilbert, 1811-1878, R.A., Architect of the Gothic Revival)

Autograph Letter Signed to the Revd G. F. Rayner D.D. regretting that “your letter through some mistake, having been opened in my absence was covered over and not seen by me. I am much annoyed at the accident; I find, however, that the slate dowells were specified, six to each pinnacle and one copper one to the fineal...”, 2 sides 8vo., Spring Gardens, London headed paper, 31st December

Scott’s father was rector of Gawcott, near Buckingham, and his grandfather was Thomas Scott, the Bible commentator. His early work on churches and workhouses was poor or even ugly, but in 1839 Scott was fired by Pugin’s writings and in 1840 won the competition for the ‘Martyrs’ Memorial’ at Oxford. From 1847 he was involved in all the major restorations of cathedrals and churches in England. In 1856 he came third in the competition for the new Government offices, but was awarded the work, on condition (at Palmerston’s insistence) that it be in a Classical or Renaissance style. Scott also designed the Albert Memorial in 1863, and lectured regularly on Gothic at the R.A., where he was Professor of Architecture.
