SIMON (John Allsebrook, 1st Viscount, 1873-1954, Statesman & Lawyer)

Fine Press Photo by Keystone, signed under the image showing him in full flying gear shaking the hand of a small girl next to his plane, 10” x 8”, Northolt Aerodrome,

Simon's tenure of office saw a number of important events in foreign policy, including the Japanese invasion of Manchuria, which had begun in September 1931, before he had taken office. Simon attracted particular opprobrium for his speech to the General Assembly of the League of Nations at Geneva on 7th December 1932 in which he failed to denounce Japan unequivocally. Thereafter, Simon was known as the "Man of Manchukuo" and was compared unfavourably to the young Anthony Eden, who was popular at Geneva.
With the original Press notice that says that this photo was taken when Simon was going to the conference in Geneva.
