SEWARD (Sir Albert Charles, 1863-1941, Botanist and Geologist)

Autograph Letter Signed to GIMSON (Sydney Ansell, 1860-1938, from 1888 President of the Leicester Secular Society) saying that he has “received this morning the agenda for a Governor’s Meeting in London... On that day I shall unfortunately be examining at the University of Glasgow and regret my inability to attend the meeting. I am beginning to wonder whether I was wise in saying I would join the Governors as it may be that it will be difficult for me to attend the meetings owing to clashing with other engagements...”, 1 side A4, Botany School, Cambridge, 16th June

Seward was appointed lecturer in botany at Cambridge University in 1890, later becoming a tutor at Emmanuel, and still later succeeding Harry Marshall Ward as Professor of Botany, Cambridge University from 1906 to 1936. There, he became a founding member of the University of Cambridge Eugenics Society, eventually becoming its Chairman.
