MONTY IS COMING OVER TO STAY WITH WINSTON MONTGOMERY (Viscount of Alamein, Bernard Law, 1887-1976, Field Marshal)

Fine Autograph Letter Signed “Monty” to “My dear Walter” Sir Walter  MONCKTON  (1st Viscount Brenchley, Walter Turner, 1891-1965, Director of Midland Bank Ltd.) regretting that he “cannot lend you a hand when you take your seat in the Lords. I am coming over this next weekend to stay with Winston, but I have to return here on Monday 1st April and will not be in England again till towards the end of April. So you must do without me. I am sure there are plenty of others who will lend a hand just as well. I might have introduced a little military discipline and drill into the ceremony - which, in fact, is rather necessary!!...”, 2 sides 4to., Trianon Palace Hotel, France, 26th March

Monckton was made Viscount Monckton of Brenchley in 1957. He had wanted to become Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales and indeed had been promised the job by Churchill and the subsequent two prime ministers, but in 1957 he decided instead to join the board of Midland Bank.
