“THE ZULUS HAVE NO BETTER FRIEND THAN MYSELF”
HAGGARD
(Sir H. Rider, 1856-1925, Novelist, Author of ‘King Solomon’s Mines’)
Autograph Letter Signed to an unnamed correspondent
thanking him for his “letter & the copy of the Ruin of Zululand which you have kindly sent me. I can only say that I have done my best to form an impartial judgement on the evidence in the Blue books. The Zulus have no better friend than myself but I look to the welfare of the nation at large rather than to that of individuals however exalted. The ‘thatcher’ anecdote was given for whatever it may be worth...”, 3 sides 8vo., 69 Gunterstone Road, West Kensington, 2nd February
The Ruin of Zululand
is a work by Frances Ellen Colenso and Lieut-Colonel Edward Durnford and it is an Account of British Doings in Zululand since the Invasion of 1879. It covers the War and subsequent events including Cetshwayo 's visit to England and his return to a broken Zululand. Colenso was a great admirer of Cetshwayo.
Haggard lived at 69 Gunterstone Road in Hammersmith, London, from mid-1885 to circa April 1888. It was at this Hammersmith address that he completed
King Solomon's Mines.
