Churchill made his sixth peacetime visit to the United States in March 1949. It was meant in part to be an opportunity for relaxing and sightseeing with his wife, Clementine, and daughter Mary. The trip included speeches delivered in New York and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and amounted to something of a “victory lap.” Churchill, then Leader of the Opposition and aspiring to be Prime Minister once more, remained an active politician.
