BRIDGES (Robert, 1844-1930, Poet Laureate)

Autograph Letter Signed to an unnamed correspondent saying that he “was moving house at Michaelmas, and your letter was mislaid, so that I do not now know what your request was. I shd not permit quotation without payment, which will probably not be in accordance with your publisher’s notion of business. If however he pays for his material my fee wd be a minimum of £1 and above that about 1/- per line. If this shd suit him please send particulars with stamped & addressed envelope for reply...”, 2 sides 8vo.,Whitebarn, Boars Hill, Oxford, 9th October

Despite being made poet laureate in 1913, Bridges was never a very well-known poet and only achieved his great popularity shortly before his death with The Testament of Beauty. However, his verse evoked response in many great British composers of the time. Among those to set his poems to music were Hubert Parry, Gustav Holst and later Gerald Finzi.
