MARY (of Teck, 1867-1953, Queen of George V)

Early Autograph Letter signed ‘May of Teck’ to Mrs Richards saying that “Hélène tells me that you cannot make up your mind to come here on Friday, so I write this line to tell you how much we hope that you, Mr Richards and Mrs Craigie will come for I assure you that it will be a great disappointment to us should you not do so. I only hope it will be fine...”, 3 sides 8vo., White Lodge, Richmond Park headed paper, 10th June

Prince Albert Victor ‘Eddy’, the Duke of Clarence, proposed on 3rd December 1891, when he and May were both staying at Luton Hoo. The engagement was announced on 7th December with the wedding date fixed for 27th February 1892. Sadly, six weeks later, he was dead from pneumonia. Princess Mary went on to get engaged to Prince George, Duke of York, the following year on another visit to Luton Hoo.
