FRY (Charles Burgess, 1872-1956, Represented Britain at Soccer, Cricket and Athletics, World Record Long Jump Holder)

Autograph Letter Signed ‘C.B. Fry to Mr Lang agreeing to “do what you ask. If you will put me in communication with the Editor he will no doubt let me know exactly what he wants and who will read it. It wld be a good thing if he cld let me know how much he requires & if necessary send me a specimen payt to guide me. Athletic notes have to be up to date & consequently are best if sent in as late as possible. I don’t want any pay unless the other contributors take it.. Poor old Teddy - Yes - no. 15 were in the cart rather. My failure was due to folly. Teddy deserved better. He really knew something for he did work & seemed to know his texts. I expect to come up for my degree next term & hope to come to see you...”, 4 sides 8vo., 22 Sydney Street, Cambridge, 7th October no year

Fry was educated at Repton School and then at Wadham College, Oxford. His greatest strength academically was in the Classics. In his final term at Oxford, Fry experienced his first (but not last) bout of mental illness, suffering a mental breakdown. As well as being a sportsman, he was also a teacher, writer, editor and publisher, but is best remembered for his career as a cricketer.
