LANKESTER (Dr Edwin, 1814-1874, Surgeon and Naturalist)

Autograph Letter Signed to E. Cook asking if he will “allow me & my friend... to call on you tomorrow... to look at your charming conservatory. My friend Mr Launders is about to put up a glass house & I hope he doesn’t. I want him to see your place. Should you not be at home would you leave permission for us to inspect your Magic Cave...”, 2 sides 8vo., 8 Lamb Row, 12th November

Lankester made a major contribution to the control of cholera in London. He was the first public analyst in England. He was a close personal friend of Darwin. The cause of London's cholera outbreaks had been identified by John Sutherland (1808–1891) and Dr John Snow (1813–1858) author of the famous map of water pumps near Broad Street. The matter was not decided until Lankester formed a committee to look into the latest outbreak.
