TOOLE (John Lawrence, 1830-1906, Comic actor, Actor-manager and Theatrical producer)

Postcard Photo by Ellis and Walery signed with a very shaky signature, and inscribed “Yours truly”, with the date, showing him head and shoulders, full face, looking stern, 5½” x 3½”, no place, 17th February

He was famous for his roles in farce and in serio-comic melodramas, in a career that spanned more than four decades, and the first actor to have a West End theatre named after him. Eventually he retired to Brighton, where, after a long struggle with Bright's disease and a degenerative spinal illness, he died in July 1906 at the age of 76.
