MACFARREN (Sir George Alexander, 1813-1887, Composer of ‘The Devil’s Opera’, 1837, Professor at the RAM)

Very shaky and illegible Autograph Letter Signed to W. C. Hann thanking him “heartily for your... expression of regard...”, 1 side 8vo., Royal Academy of Music headed paper, 2nd March

His health was poor from childhood and his eyesight was weak, so much so that he had to use a powerful magnifying-glass for reading. He was withdrawn from school in 1823 to undergo a course of eye treatment. The treatment was unsuccessful, and his eyesight progressively worsened until he became totally blind in 1860.
