Dilke was Radical M.P. for Chelsea, 1868-1886. He was admitted to the Privy Council in 1882. In December of that year, he entered the cabinet as President of the Local Government Board, serving until 1885 when his affair with Mrs. Crawford helped to bring down the Liberal Government. He returned to public life in 1892 as M.P. for the Forest of Dean, and helped to organize the Labour M.P.s into an effective force. Dilke left important bequests to the National Portrait Gallery.
