REUTER
([Paul] Julius, 1821-1899, later ennobled as Freiherr von Reuter, British Entrepreneur and Pioneer of Telegraphy and News Reporter)
Signature and the end of an Autograph Letter Signed to
Sir Roderick I. MURCHISON
(1792-1871, Director General of the Geological Survey, 1st Bart.) saying “observations interesting to all geographers he intends...” and “arrangements. I am Sir your most obt Servant...”, 4½” x 1½”, no place, no date
After setting up a carrier-pigeon service between Aachen and Brussels, terminal points of the German and French-Belgian telegraph lines, Reuter, formerly known as Israel Beer Josaphat, founded in 1851 the international news agency that still bears his name. In connection with his business, which was originally a telegraphic news agency, Reuter had several cables of his own laid, and in 1865 obtained a concession on a submarine cable between France and the United States, which he agreed to operate jointly with the Anglo-American Telegraph Company.
