STRATHNAIRN
(Hugh Henry Rose, 1801-1885, Field Marshal, from 1866 1st Baron)
Autograph Letter Signed to “My dear Duke of Wellington”,
saying he “came here from thc Highlands for a... shooting, & am going, afterwards, to Nicolls... & would be very happy if you would assist me & come here on the 15th inst, Wednesday... There are a great many partridges, & I propose adopting a new plan of tactics which, I hope, will make them fly the right way. I am afraid it is no use asking the General but I should be delighted if he would honour me with a visit. Pce Wilhelm had to go through a very stiff... in the Church...”, 4 sides 8vo., Euston Hall, Thetford, no date
In 1840 Colonel Rose was selected for special service in Syria, supporting the Turkish Government against Mehemet Ali’s Egyptian forces. He remained as British Consul-General. In the Crimea his fluency in French was invaluable as commissioner at the French HQ. In 1857 he volunteered for India, becoming commander-in-chief there in 1860.
