RYE (Walter, 1843-1929, Athlete and Antiquary who wrote over 80 books on Norfolk)

Autograph Letter Signed to Mr Barton saying that he doesn’t “know how to find out about the Paston portraits - a search through all the files of local papers would be a very long one. By this post I am writing to Prince F V Duleep Singh who is most keen on all Norfolk portraits, he may know. I suppose he could see them at Threxton on making an appointment? He is now making a catalogue of all Norfolk portraits & wd be delighted to include these...”, on the verso is a handwritten family tree of the Paston family, 3 sides 8vo., Rectory Cottage, Lammas Buxton, Norwich, 22nd September

Rye was the "father" of cross country running (or paper chasing, as it was then known), being the principal founder in 1868 of the Thames Hare and Hounds, and its president until his death. He regularly visited Norwich throughout his life, and helped save a number of its historic buildings from destruction. He was a founder member of the Norfolk Broads Protection Society.
Threxton House in Norfolk contained Thomas Barton’s museum in the 20th century.
