(Major General Maharaja Sawai Governor, 1912-1970, Indian Prince, Maharaja of Jaipur)
Fine Signaure with "Best wishes" and the date
on a card, together with a coloured magazine photo, 5½” x 3½”, no place, 12th July
In 1948, after the state was absorbed into independent India, he was granted a privy purse, certain privileges, and the continued use of the title Maharaja of Jaipur by the Government of India, which he retained until his death in 1970. He also held the office of Rajpramukh (Governor) of Rajasthan between 1949 and 1956. In later life, he served as Ambassador of India to Spain. He was a notable polo player. Following his death Indira Gandhi was finally able to repress the power of India's former rulers in democratic India as they formed a large bulk of her opposition party, the Swatantra party.
