KYRIL (1876-1938, Grand Duke of Russia, married to Princess Victoria Melita, which caused Tsar Nicholas II to strip him of his medals and uniform, declared himself head of the Romanoff family in 1924 to the Dowager Empress’s disapproval)

Rare Autograph Postcard Signed ‘Gr. D. Kirill’ in English to his one time nurse Millicent (’Milly’) Crofts saying that he has “sent you 100 fcs & hope you may have a bright & happy Christmas. May my small gift bring you joy & comfort, then my sincere wish shall be realized. You will be glad to hear, that our baby is a beauty & getting on splendidly...”, 2 sides postcard with gold crest, Paris, 21st December

Millicent Crofts (1852-1941) was a nurse for the family of Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich and his wife Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna. She worked for the family in St Petersburg from 1876-1886, when she was dismissed by the Grand Duchess.
Grand Duke Kirill married his first cousin, Princess Victoria Melita of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha on 8th October 1905 without any consent from Tsar Nicholas II. The marriage caused a scandal in the courts of European royalty as Princess Victoria was divorced from her first husband, Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig of Hesse, also her first cousin. In 1908, after the death of Grand Duke Alexei Alexandrovich, Nicholas II restored Kirill to his rank of captain in the Imperial Russian Navy and his position as aide de camp to the emperor. Their first child Grand Duchess Maria Kirillovna of Russia was born on 2nd February 1907.
