Lt Col Francis (Frank) Thackeray took part in the Battle of Delville Wood in France in July 1916 in the region of the Somme. He was in command of about 3000 South African infantry, who were instructed to "defend the wood at all cost". They defended the wood in a fierce battle that lasted almost 10 days. Less than 400 survivors walked out alive. One of them was Lt Col Francis Thackeray. He received the DSO for this action.
He also served in Chitral, Matabele Rebellion 1896 and South Africa 1899-1902.
