ALMA TADEMA (Sir Laurence, 1836-1912, Classical Painter)

Fine Autograph Letter Signed to Mr Boehm, telling him that he is “just paintinga picture of sculptors busy on a marble head. Will you be so kind as to lend me and let me have by bearer a basket full of different tools of a marble worker! I will return the lot next Monday afternoon...”, 1 side oblong 8vo., Townshend House, Regents Park, 14th August

The recipient is probably Joseph Edgar BOEHM R.A. (1834-1890) who was an Austrian-born British medallist and sculptor, best known for the "Jubilee head" of Queen Victoria on coinage, and the statue of the Duke of Wellington at Hyde Park Corner. During his career he maintained a large studio in London and produced a significant volume of public works and private commissions. A speciality of Boehm's was the portrait bust.
