Autograph Letter Signed to Monsieur Siran about treatments for gout saying he had given “a box at your address, containing several medicines. I will tell you how to use. 1° You will take a pill No. 1 in the evening and morning. You will take care to leave a distance of two hours and a half between the time you take this pill and the time you eat. 2° You will wash your legs and feet in the evening with the liquor contained in the bottle. 3° You will apply the plasters that I gave you to your knees and you will leave them until the skin is covered with small pimples that release a whitish humor. Then you will remove the plasters and wash the area with a light decoction of warm marshmallow. 4° If gout is felt, you will use an infusion of lime flowers and in a litre of this infusion you will dissolve one of the doses labelled herbal tea. 5° If the gout affects the shoulders, chest, or kidneys, you will bring back to the legs by washing them with schilitic vinegar in which sea salt has been dissolved. Please, Sir, to keep me informed of everything you experience. And when you write to me, I would be grateful to remind me what you have done. Chaussier was the First President of the Philotechnic Society and one of its eight founders (1769-1837), he was a lawyer in Parliament in 1789.

Monsieur, J’ai remis à Mr Riban une boîte à votre adresse, contenant plusieurs médicaments dont je vais vous indiquer l’emploi. 1° Vous prendrez soir et matin une pilule n° 1. Vous aurez soin de laisser une distance de deux heures et demie entre le moment où vous prendrez cette pilule et celui où vous mangerez. 2° Vous laverez le soir vos jambes et vos pieds avec la liqueur contenue dans la bouteille. 3° Vous appliquerez sur les genoux les emplâtres que je vous ai donnés et vous les laisserez jusqu’à ce que la peau soit couverte de petits boutons qui laissent écouler une humeur blanchâtre. Alors vous ôterez les emplâtres et laverez la partie avec une légère décoction de guimauve tiède. 4° Si la goutte se fait sentir, vous ferez usage d’une infusion de fleurs de tilleul et dans un litre de cette infusion vous ferez dissoudre une des doses étiquetées tisane. 5° Si la goutte se porte aux épaules, à la poitrine, aux reins, vous la rappellerez aux jambes en les lavant avec du vinaigre scillitique dans lequel on aura fait dissoudre du sel marin. Vous voudrez bien, Monsieur, avoir l’obligeance de me tenir au courant de tout ce que vous éprouverez. Et lorsque vous m’écrirez, je vous serais obligé de me rappeler ce que vous aurez fait. Nota. Vous trouverez dans la boîte des pilules antalgiques dont vous ferez usage (comme je vous l’ai indiqué dans la note que je vous ai remise à votre départ) toutes les fois que les douleurs seraient trop vives ; j’espère que vous n’en aurez pas très grand besoin et que pendant le cours de l’hiver vous n’aurez que rarement occasion de les employer.

Paris, ce ___181_ Monsieur, Je regrette de ne pouvoir pas répondre d’une manière plus conforme au désir que vous m’exprimez par votre lettre du ___ courant, mais il m’est impossible de vous soigner par correspondance ; le traitement de la goutte exige des soins assidus et il est indispensable que pendant les premiers mois je voie chaque jour les malades ; il peur s’éloigner lorsque l’humeur est assez atténuée pour n’avoir plus d’accident à craindre, et alors, quelque soit la distance, mes conseils suffisent pour diriger la suite du traitement jusqu’à guérison. Quant aux goutteux qui ne peuvent pas se rendre près de moi, je n’ai à leur offrir que des moyens palliatifs ; je puis éloigner leurs accès, en diminuer la durée, et rendre les douleurs moins aigües, mais il m’est impossible de guérir ceux que je ne voie pas journellement. Si quelque circonstance vous empêche, Monsieur, de venir à Paris, je puis au moins, en allégeant considérablement vos souffrances, prévenir une partie des ravages suite ordinaire des accès de goutte. Sir, I regret not being able to respond in a manner more compliant with the desire you expressed to me in your letter of ___ current, but it is impossible for me to treat you by correspondence; the treatment of gout requires diligent care and it is essential that during the first months I see the patients every day; they can go away when the mood is sufficiently attenuated to no longer have any accidents to fear, and then, whatever the distance, my advice is sufficient to direct the rest of the treatment until recovery. As for the gouty patients who cannot come to me, I have only palliative means to offer them; I can distance their attacks, reduce their duration, and make the pain less acute, but it is impossible for me to cure those I do not see daily.
