Lord Lyttelton was Principal of Queen's College, Birmingham, 1845, and of the Birmingham and Midland Institute, 1853. In 1849 he was chairman of the association that founded Canterbury province, New Zealand. Gladstone and he married sisters on the same day, which they commemorated in a book of Latin verses.
