The writer Madame de Genlis (1746-1830) had been governess to members of the Orléans family, including Louis Philippe, who declared late in life that she had been "the only woman he had truly loved".
John Wilson Croker, (1780-1857, Secretary to the Admiralty), and historian of the French Revolution, wrote on 6th November 1819 that he was "once more in England, after an absence of 20 days, 14 of which in Paris. I passed my time between book shops and the play-houses" (Croker Papers, 1884, vol. 1 p. 150). Only twice in 20 years did he take so much as three weeks' leave from the Admiralty - the other was in July 1815 to see Paris and Waterloo.
Horace Vernet painted historical scenes, costumes and uniforms, and illustrated a Life of Napoleon.
