Francesco was the son of the Austrian Archduke Ferdinand, Governor of Lombardy, who acquired Modena from his wife Maria Beatrice, heiress of the d'Estes. 1814 marked the fall of Napoleon and of the Kingdom of Italy, and in North Italy the return of Austrian influence.
