Bismarck called the Grand Duke "Counsel for good relations between Berlin and St. Petersburg" - his sister Augusta was the wife of Wilhelm I, and his mother Maria the daughter of Paul I. Brought up under the eye of Goethe, the Duke furthered the literary, musical and scientific eminence of Weimar, founding the Art School, the Music School, and the Wartburg, and as active patron of the Schiller Institute, the Goethe Society, the Shakespeare Society, and the University of Jena.
