MAXWELL (Sir Murray, 1775-1831, K.C.B., F.R.S., Captain R.N.)

Fine  hand coloured  portrait, drawn and etched by Richard Dighton, 1785-1880, showing him full length in uniform, with his K.C.B. medal on its crimson ribbon, a striking portrait in profile, reminiscent of Dighton's caricature style, 13¾" x 9¾", published by T. McLean, Haymarket, no date, c. laid down by side margins

Maxwell served in the West Indies and South America, then in 1816 took Lord Amherst to China. During the latter's mission he made extensive explorations in the Far East (see Capt. Basil Hall's account, 1818). On the way home with Lord Amherst they were wrecked in the straits of Gaspar but all the crew were saved and Murray was exonerated.
