[SWANWICK (Anna, 1813-1899, promoter of higher education for women)]

Postcard addressed to her by "your truest Hedwige", with a lithographed view of Geneva, its bridges and a steamer, behind is Mont Salève and the distant Mont Blanc, 1 side card, [Geneva], 23rd April

Anna Swanwick went to Germany in 1839 to enlarge her education, and became a famous translator of Goethe and Aeschylus. She taught evening classes for women in English Literature, and helped found Queen's College, Bedford College (of which she was principal), Somerville and Girton.
