CHALMERS (Thomas, 1780-1847, Scottish divine and leader of the 'Disruption')

Unsigned Autograph note, "To preach in St. John's" (Glasgow, where he was minister 1820-1823), "in the forenoon and evening of May 11th. ...", old identification on verso, 1 side 2¼" x 3¾", no date, c.

Chalmers' sermons still have power to move with their compelling rhetoric and special insights. He wrote on natural theology, apologetics and social economy, and, after an outstanding career as minister in Glasgow, and professor at St. Andrews and Edinburgh, led the 470 ministers who 'came out' in 1843 to found the Free Church of Scotland.
