KRAUS (Lili, b. 1905, Hungarian-born Pianist)

Signature on the heading from a fragment of a printed program, no place, 25th November defect in blank portion from former laying down

On the back can be read "on hearing her one seemed to grasp the organic growth of the work as if ... witnessing its birth under the composer's hands", and a mention of her famous duo with Szymon Goldberg.
Lili Kraus studied under Bartók and Kodaly, and was a fine interpreter of Beethoven, Mozart and Bartók himself. Having settled in London, she made a trip to Java in 1942 just in time to be captured by the Japanese, a privation eased a little by a Japanese conductor who arranged for her to play in Tokyo. After the war she took New Zealand citizenship and lived latterly in the U.S.A.
