Sir George sang in the St. Matthew Passion in 1877 under Brahms, conducted the Boston Symphony Orchestra and was the first conductor of the Scottish Orchestra 1893-1895. He was knighted in 1914, never ceased to sing in public, including on radio, and at 84 held an exhibition of his paintings in London.
