NORTH (Dudley, d. 1764, of Glemham, son of Dudley, c. 1686-1730, M.P. for Orford, and grandson of Sir Dudley North, 1641-1691, the financier and politician)

Autograph Letter Signed in his attractive hand to Robert Sparrow of Worlingham, near Beccles, thanking him for his "obliging favour of the fourth Inst." and saying that "Mr. Mountague North and I design to have the pleasure of dining with you next Wednesday ... at two o'Clock", with a footnote "All [my] Services [to you]", 1 side 4to., [Little] Glemham, near Saxmundham, Suffolk, 5th January 1749 /

The writer's mother was Catherine, daughter and co-heiress of Elihu YALE, 1648-1721, benefactor of the college at Saybrook, which removed to New Haven and was re-named after him. The writer's father bought Glemham Hall from the last ladies of the Glemham family. It eventually went to a nephew, d. 1829, who entailed it on his kinsman the Earl of Guilford. The writer's cousin, the Revd. Mountague North (d. 1779) was Rector of Sternfield, 1 m. S. of Saxmundham.
Bingham, in his 'Elihu Yale', tells how the latter was rather fed up at providing a dowry of £20,000 for Catherine. He seems to be mistaken, however, in thinking that all Catherine's sons died young, since Dudley lived to 1764. Compare the present Dudley's will (copy at BL Add. 19190) where he makes bequests to his married sisters Ann Herbert and Mary Long, and large bequests to charity, including one of £5,000.
At the top is 'To Robt. Sparrow Esq.' in an early hand.
