Ismail, son of Ibrahim, and grandson of Mehemet Ali, was educated in France at St Cyr. He was of undoubted ability, and exercised a great fascination over foreign investors. Having pushed Egypt's credit to its limit, he was forced to sell his shares in the Suez Canal in 1875. Deposed by the Sultan in a telegram of 26th June 1879, which referred to him as the ex-Khedive, he left immediately for Naples, but after a while was allowed to retire to his palace on the Bosphorus.
