[ISMAIL PASHA
(1830-1895, Khedive of Egypt 1863-1879)]
Folding Menu in French for Dinner,
of 13 classic French courses and dessert, with a full (though undated) wine list, on the front is an embossed 'I' intertwined with crescents in red and gold, above is the Egyptian crown, the back is made out as a place card for Colonel Aymonino, 3 sides card 5¾" x 4", printed by Richter & Co. of Naples, 11th April
Ismail, son of Ibrahim, and grandson of Mehemet Ali, was educated in France at St Cyr. He was of undoubted ability, and exercised a great fascination over foreign investors. Having pushed Egypt's credit to its limit, he was forced to sell his shares in the Suez Canal in 1875. Deposed by the Sultan in a telegram of 26th June 1879, which referred to him as the ex-Khedive, he left immediately for Naples, but after a while was allowed to retire to his palace on the Bosphorus.
