GUN LICENSE [CARLO II LODOVICO (1799-1883, King of Etruria 1803-1807, Duke of Lucca 1824-1847, Duke of Parma 1847-1849)]

Permit, in Italian with translation, to carry a hunting rifle, signed in the Duke's name by C. Orsucci, President of Good Government, with the Duke's Arms at the head, made out for Antonio Bacei of Corsagna, and valid for the current year except from 1st April to the 15th August, though he may continue to shoot in marshes, uncultivated land, and lakes except Lake Massaciuccoli (totally forbidden) till the 1st of May, printed in attractive type within a border of type ornaments, signed also by Secretary General Giovanni Manfredi, 1 side folio, Lucca, 20th January

Carlo as a boy had been King of Etruria, 1803-1807, a Kingdom set up by the French in 1801, but taken over directly by Napoleon in 1807. After he succeeded his mother in 1824, he reacted strongly to his clerical upbringing and for a time was a Protestant (1833-1842). While Carlo Alberto of Savoy was putting down Mazzini's conspiracy in 1833, Carlo was giving an amnesty to all political prisoners. He spent much of his time travelling, and built up a fine collection of 15th and 16th century books, particularly liturgical works. He even built a chapel for the Greek rite at Marlia. Not the most efficient of rulers, he succeeded Napoleon's widow Marie Louise in 1847 as Duke of Parma, but abdicated in 1849 to continue his travels and studies.
