Henry was a "clogger", his father Hezekiah a Yeoman from Kildwick in the Aire valley, and Mary's father Thomas a local clothier. Surnames occurring most frequently in the signatures include Bottomley, Brook, Dickinson, Earnshaw, Lees, Lockwood and Woodhead.
