BRAGANÇA (Dom Miguel, 1853-1927, Miguelite pretender, eldest son of Miguel I, 1802-1866, King of Portugal 1828-1834, Duke of)

Typed Letter Signed in English to the travel writer  V.C. Scott O'Connor,  (1869-1945), thanking him for his book ['The Empire Cruise'], so far "the introduction by L.S. Amery is very interesting from the historical point of view, regarding the past as well as the future ... It will always be, with your other books, the pride of my library ... I shall write again when I have finished reading it", 1 side folio, Seebenstein, Lower Austria, 5th January

The Duke's father escaped from Portugal in 1834 after the civil war between the Miguelites (absolutists) and partisans of Maria II. In 1851 he married a German lady and brought up his family in Germany.
The Duke's son, D. Duarte, became Miguelite Pretender in 1920, and sole Pretender in 1932 when the exiled Manoel II died.
For 'The Empire Cruise', Scott O'Connor accompanied the 'Special Service Squadron' under Vice-Admiral Sir Frederick Field, round the Dominions, as did a silent film crew. The book is enquiring, even critical, not jingoistic, with many comments by ordinary people he met. Amery's introduction stresses that the Navy is no longer centred on the North Sea, as in the war, but on the Mediterranean, to keep the oceans open for trade.
