HOWARD (Sir Robert, 1626-1698, Restoration Dramatist and collaborator with Dryden, from 1673 Auditor of the Receipt of the Exchequer)

Signature on portion of an Order of the Exchequer, in Latin with transcription, to pay Lady Ruth Trevor £250, being her half-year's pension to Christmas 26 Charles II (1674), 1 side 2¼" x 8", 11th January 1674, new style sides defective just touching last two letters of signature

Lady Ruth was the widow of Sir John Trevor, 1626-1672, an M.P. under the Commonwealth but who favoured the Restoration, from 1668 Secretary of State. The pension was one of a handful of priority payments out of the excise, granted by Letters Patent of 24th July 1672. It appears to have been last paid in November 1687.
Signed also by [Thomas] Vernon (d. 1685, from 1676 2nd Bart.), one of the four Tellers of the Exchequer.
