THE ORIGINAL NATIONAL DEBT LINDSEY (Robert Bertie, 1660-1723, from 21st December 1706 Marquis of)

Fine Receipt Document Signed "Lindsey G[reat] C[hamberlain]" to James Vernon, Teller of the Exchequer, for £175, being 3 months' Annuity due at "Lady day last past", on £5,000 advanced to the Exchequer on 27th September 1693 "towards carrying on a Vigorous War against France", printed with MS additions, 1 side 12" x 7½", the receipt 22nd April

The clerk has written of Lindsey "late Lord Willughby", his style when the loan was made.
The 14% Annuities were to be paid out of duties on "beer, ale and other liquors". Contributions up to £1,000,000 were invited by 1st May 1693 (see 4 William & Mary, 1692, c. 3), to be repaid during the single life of the contributor or his nominee at 10% p.a. till 1700, thereafter at 7%. But the same act provided that if the £1,000,000 were undersubscribed, additional contributions at 14% on single lives could be accepted up till Michaelmas, 29th September 1693, and many held out for this better offer.
