COFFIN (Sir Isaac, 1759-1839, M.P., Admiral)

Document signed approving a demand of Boatswain's Stores "for ... H.M. Ship La Mahonesa", for 10 hundredweight of junk (old rope), and 130 fathoms of rope, signed also by Captain John Giffard, and Michael Sullivan [Boatswain], 1 side 6" x 7½", endorsements on verso, River Tagus, 17th April left margin trimmed with loss of a few letters (easily supplied)

Coffin, born in Boston, Mass., of a famous sea-faring family, was disabled by accident when rescuing a drowning seaman in 1790, but became Commissioner in Corsica, Minorca, Halifax, N.S., and Sheerness. He was a close friend of Nelson (see his letters to Nelson in the British Library).
The amount of Junk has been reduced, there is a contemporary pencil note "10 cwt of Junk will do". "Brooms 24" has also been crossed out.
